DropCam Pro by Nest

This product is a Google product with all the high-tech programming that Google is known for but has recently been acquired by Nest. Check Out their Facebook.

  • Only camera on the market with Dual Band Wi-Fi
  • High-Def. video live streaming 1920 x 1080 full motion pxl

Protect America

With ADT as the parent company, Protect America has sufficient financial backing to ensure that they will not be going out of business any time soon. That said, they only have a Better Business Bureau rating of A- due to the comparatively high customer complaints. Some customers have informed BBB that it takes a long time to get resolution.

They have 9.442 followers on Facebook and comments seem to be mostly “thank you for getting my system running again”. That may indicate that there are lots of customers with system problems or that they have good tech support.

Pros

  • Silver, Gold and Platinum plans offer more window/door sensors than any other system including the parent company’s offerings
  • Offer a trade option for some parts – change a motion sensor to a window sensor
  • No upfront fees – installation and equipment – to sign the contract
  • National call centers shared with ADT

Cons

  • Fire, smoke, medical and carbon monoxide equipment and monitoring are extras
  • Z-wave technology and equipment is not included in any package
  • No video camera is offered in any package and they charge up to $15 month per camera if you add it on
  • According to their contract, the stated plan price is only an estimate and it could be more after extras, taxes and shipping are included
  • According to their contract, the monitoring service price indicated is an estimate and monitoring for extras added to the contract will raise their fees
  • Contract begins at date that equipment is shipped not when it begins being monitored
  • Difficult to cancel contract or return equipment

Best Suited for:

  • Renters with own fire, medical alert and carbon monoxide equipment in home
  • Apartments and multi-family complexes
  • For those who have experience with setting up wireless integration following written and video instructions
  • Home owners who do not want to leave their system behind when moving

LifeShield by DirecTV

  • Choice of DIY or Professional installation service
  • Monitors your existing fire, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors without additional monitoring fees

ADT Security

ADT has been around as a national security service far longer than any other company and as a result, has more subscribers than any other service.

If you want to know what ADT’s actual customers say about the company, read the public posts on their Facebook page. Customer reviews on paid sites are commonly censored or written by professional writers instead of actual customers.

Taken as a whole, ADT must be doing something right to have remained in business for so many years.

Pros

  • Offer more plan varieties than any other company
  • All systems include sound alarm
  • All contracts include fire, smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring with automated notification to your nearest fire company
  • Offers DSL, cable broadband, cellular radio tower and wireless connections
  • Offers 2-way intercom with call center for emergencies and when power goes down

Cons

  • Each package only includes 3 door/window sensors – which means that you only have one window in your residence
  • None of the packages include video camera
  • No guarantee that you or police will be contacted on alarm
  • No guarantee on how soon after alarm goes off that a call center agent will pick it and begin notification process
  • Cannot take the system with you when you move but still are required to pay the contract off in full even if you are no longer using system
  • Must provide analog telephone line for fire alarm – VOIP is not acceptable
  • Cannot install in certain locations or homes due to third party codes and regulations

Best Suited for:

  • Homeowners of Single family homes or duplexes
  • Urban areas with guard responders available
  • Estates requiring special services such as mail pick-up service or responders to meet police when homeowners are out of town
  • Gated communities with or without security guards that can confirm alarm for police
  • You must own the property that you are alarming in order for ADT to consider your application.

The Pros outweigh
the Cons … Tell Me More

Vivint Security

This company is essentially the new kid on the block when it comes to hard wired security systems with professional installation and monitoring. Part of their equipment is made by AT&T and other parts come from the England plant for UTI.

According to their customer’s comments on their Facebook page, it seems that they are still working out the kinks of enough trained installers, customer service reps that are trained properly and lack of company resolution support teams. The new owner of this company is a very exceptional business man and will, no doubt, get these issues ironed out at some point.

Vivint Security uses the same base contract as ADT and borrows the same policies for service without the manpower to enact it smoothly. You must own the property where you want the system installed. An analog (land line) telephone connection is necessary for the fire alarm system to work properly.

Pros

  • Best plan is the middle plan for $60 a month
  • All plans include fire, smoke, carbon monoxide and burglar alarm monitoring
  • All plans include Touch screen control panels with battery back-up
  • All plans include remote keyfob, door/window sensors, motion detectors and glass break detectors
  • Energy Saver and Automated packages include Z-wave thermostat technology
  • Automated plan includes video camera with live streaming access

Cons

  • Customers repeatedly state that it takes up to 2 weeks for service techs to arrive
  • 42-month contract that cannot be transferred to new location when you move but that you are responsible to pay off even after you move when the service ceases

Best Suited for:

  • Homeowners of single family dwellings
  • **May offer service in areas that ADT does not.

Relationship of Criminal to Victim Data Table

From 2005 through 2010, household property crimes involving only stolen firearms resulted in a total loss of about $27 million per year. The average financial loss when only one gun was stolen was between $400 and $500 per incident.

Other findings showed—

  • About three out of four household property crimes involving stolen firearms occurred in households headed by white non-Hispanic persons.
  • From 2005 through 2010, the majority of household burglaries (56 percent) or other property crimes (59 percent) involving stolen firearms occurred in the South.
  • Households in rural areas experienced a disproportionate percentage of burglaries involving stolen firearms (34 percent), compared to the overall percentage of U.S. households located in rural areas (17 percent).

REPEAT BURGLARY OFFENDERS WORRY SOME DURHAM RESIDENTS

  • Unfortunately, once you have been burgled there is a very real possibility that you could be burgled again, and this could occur within a relatively short period of time. The same burglar/s who committed the initial burglary, or their associate/s, may be responsible for the repeat burglary.Reasons for a repeat burglary can include the following:
  • Burglars know there are additional items of value in a home and view it as an easy target because they cannot see any obvious improvements in the security of the home
  • Burglars may try to burgle a home again within 4-6 weeks of the first burglary because they think that the goods previously stolen will have been replaced through insurance
  • Burglars may return because they now have a buyer for some particular item they saw on the first occasion
  • Burglars return to burgle other residential buildings (e.g. if the garden shed was broken into on the first occasion, the home may be burgled on a return visit), and
  • Burglars acting independently of each other may consider the house to be an attractive target on separate occasions. For example a house which is often empty, has poor security and is located in an isolated area is likely to be an attractive target to most burglars.
  • In 2012, 69.3 percent of all persons arrested were white, 28.1 percent were black, and the remaining 2.6 percent were of other races. (See Table 43.)

Major Findings from the DNA Field Experiment

Findings of the study, averaged across the five jurisdictions, were that when DNA evidence was collected at property crime scenes:

  • Suspect identifications and arrests doubled.
Twice as many property crime suspects were identified and arrested when DNA evidence was collected (in addition to fingerprint evidence) compared to a traditional property crime investigation.
  • Cases accepted for prosecutions doubled.
More than twice as many cases were accepted for prosecution when DNA evidence was processed than when it was not.
  • The suspects arrested through DNA identifications were more dangerous.
DNA arrestees had double the number of prior arrests and double the prior convictions as those arrested through traditional investigations.
  • DNA was twice as effective in identifying suspects as fingerprints.
In cases where both fingerprint and biological evidence were collected, more suspects were identified via the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) than were identified via the FBI's Automated Fingerprint Identification (AFIS) system.
